Back to school? Look after their backs!

It’s that time again! Time to dig out the school jumper, dust off the pencil case and get ready for homework, dirty PE kit and grubby knees. One thing you may not have thought about is how well your child’s spine is equipped to deal with the stresses and strains of going back to school.

New school year, new challenges for the body

The start of the school year brings a number of challenges, not least of which is the stress that can be put on the body. To go from an active summer spent outside, to sitting in a classroom all day has exactly the same effect on their spines as sitting in front of a computer all day can have on ours. Not to mention the heavy bags full of books that they carry around. Add to this the rough and tumble of games sessions and lots of time spent with heads down, staring at tablet or smartphone screens and you’ve got a recipe for an unhappy spine.

Strain on the spine can impact the health of the nervous system, leading to stiffness, poor posture, back or neck pain and headaches. This can impair your child’s function and development and frankly limit their enjoyment of the things they love to do.

Choose the right back pack

One of the most common issues is back packs. Choosing the right bag can make all the difference. It isn’t necessary to spend the earth, just make sure the straps and back have decent padding. Make sure they wear the bag at the correct height (with the bottom of the bag around waist height or a little bit lower). Finally make sure they don’t carry too much in the bag, just what is necessary for that day.
